Colonial Revival Style Moulding Package - Whole House Interior Elevation Ideas featuring Kuiken Brothers Classical Moulding

Kuiken Brothers Classical Moulding is one of the largest, in-stock moulding collections available in the U.S., shipping to residential and commercial projects nationwide. All profiles are milled from poplar and are derived from Classical origins, discovered through meticulous research of the Historic American Building Survey and pattern books of the 18th & 19th centuries.

One element that makes Kuiken Brothers’ Classical Moulding Collection unique are the consistent details found in various size profiles which allow designers and installers to maintain a consistent look and feel throughout a home even with varying ceiling heights on different floors. This follows English Architect Robert Adam’s logical theory of reduction in trim details in his book, Classical Architecture. For example, every Kuiken Brothers Classical Moulding casing/ architrave option is available in a 5-1/2”, 4-1/2” and 3-1/2” proportionately scaled replica. Each Kuiken Brothers’ Classical Moulding base moulding has an identically matching base cap. This design flexibility allows you to offer your clients a distinctly unique house at a greater value.

Following this theory, we are pleased to offer you a Colonial Revival Style Moulding package for an entire house.  Colonial Revival moulding represent a mix of Georgian and Federal style profiles as the installations occurred between the two architectural periods in the United States between the 1770′ and 1780’s.

This home features 9’ ceilings in the family/ great room and 8′ ceilings throughout the rest of the first floor and second floor. The additional ceiling height in the family/ great room allows us to offer a more intricate cornice build-up, as shown above where we have combined the KB317 and KB324 bed moulding. The window and door casings are a 4-1/2″ wide KB104. This room is also elevated in design by incorporating a chair rail, the KB404.

Pictured above you are able to see how this Colonial Revival Boxed Cornice was created. First the “box/ beam” is installed to the wall and then the KB317 crown and KB324 bed moulding are added to create that Colonial Revival look and feel.

The casing profile used throughout this project is the KB104 casing. The sweeping cove/ cavetto shape of the backband runs right into the small cove in the middle of the profile, creating an elegant series of shadow lines.

The KB404 chair rail mimics the sweeping backband helping to create a cohesive look and feel throughout the moulding package. Even thought the shadow lines will be different based on positioning of the profile, there is an appreciation for the familiarity of the collection of profiles that just makes sense.

The KB227 base moulding stands at 7-1/2″ and 3/4″ wide – just enough to add an elegant series of beads which work really well together with the small nose & cove details of the KB104 casing and KB404 chair rail. This profile can be found in a range of our Classical Moulding Collection as the shape is commonly found throughout base profiles in ancient Greek and Roman architecture. If you would like a larger profile in the room with 9′ ceilings, strongly consider swapping with the KB231 9″ base.

The sill and apron detail were created with the KB780 stool and the KB104 inverted casing. This creates consistency among the entire collection.

The dining room ceiling height is lower at 8′, however we were able to maintain both the 4-1/2″ KB104 casing and the 7-1/2″ KB227 base. Focusing on the public spaces with more intricate moulding details leaves a lasting impression with your guests as they enter the home. The images above showcase the moulding selection that we have chosen for the first floor dining room. It is adjacent to the front entry, but we scaled down the cornice to a single crown moulding. It is not as elaborate or intricate, with the thought/ philosophy that the four part cornice at the entry will create an impressive millwork visual as a guest enters the home, establishing the style of the home, and then allowing the design to scale down throughout the rest of the home. The ceiling height here is 8′ so the cornice detail is not as elaborate, but since this is still a public space we went with a large crown, KB318.

And finally, we come to the bedroom moulding selection.

This space is private and therefore does not need to be as elaborate or intricate. The crown size was reduced to the KB317 and the chair rail was omitted from this space. This affords the client a little extra in their budget to focus on the first floor details, impressing guests, heightening first impression experience, and ultimately increasing resale value.

Moulding selection is often left to the final stages of remodel and new construction projects. With some simple thought and consideration early on, a truly custom looking home can be offered to your client. Properly selected moulding can completely transform the look and feel of a home. Kuiken Brothers Classical Moulding offers a whole new way to look at moulding and a presentation that can easily be discussed with your clients at the beginning of the project.

Contained within pages of these unique moulding catalogs and pattern books you will find several series of classical and historical moulding. We have been very meticulous in our research and have taken great care in depicting them as historically and architecturally accurate as possible. These are the mouldings which were installed in many period homes of the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries. If the terms Early American, Georgian, Greek Revival, Federal, Colonial Revival or Craftsman pique your interest then you will surely find these profiles intriguing.

Choosing the correct moulding profiles will transform an ordinary room into one with style, beauty, and ambiance. While these craftsmen understood that combining various mouldings produces beautiful results, they also understood that proper moulding selection can have a huge impact on the overall character and value of a home. Many of the profiles are available in a range of sizes in order to accommodate different room configurations and ceiling heights while still maintaining proper scale and proportion. These profiles are in-stock and ready to be delivered at your convenience. We look forward to working with you.
